I am a modern philosopher, author, speaker, and musician widely known for my international bestseller The Art of Living: The Classical Manual on Virtue, Happiness, and Effectiveness. I am a strong proponent of expressing philosophy in accessible language so that anyone can apply it to better his or her life. My greatest joy is inspiring others to find meaning, to make meaning, to use one’s life for good, and to grow a vibrant contemplative life in a fragmented world.
AREAS OF INTEREST & EXPERTISE
TRIBUTE: EDITH EGER
“We don’t know where we’re going, we don’t know what’s going to happen, but no one can take away from you what you put in your own mind”.
– Edith Eger
One of my cherished teachers is Edith Eger. Like Viktor Frankl, Dr. Eger lived through unspeakably degrading conditions during the Holocaust and came to the conclusion that the will to meaning is redemptive. After a childhood of bearing witness to evil and relentless death, she built an exemplary life as a psychologist whose therapy, books, and teaching have inspired millions. I feel a special affinity with Dr. Eger because she emphasizes practical ways to break free from the inner prisons of our own making.
LIVING WELL WITH SHARON LEBELL PODCAST
I also conduct interviews, facilitate philosophical conversations, and lead podcast discussions in my “garden”. Living Well With Sharon Lebell is a crash course in how small pivots in our thoughts, words, and deeds can change our lives forever.
Community-building and shared learning experiences are at the heart of our work as public philosophers. In The Walled Garden, I love bringing people together with the common aim of learning, growing, and communal meaning-making.
THE ART OF LIVING
Epictetus was born into slavery about 55 ce in the eastern outreaches of the Roman Empire. Once freed, he established an influential school of Stoic philosophy, stressing that human beings cannot control life, only their responses to it. By putting into practice the ninety-three witty, wise, and razor-sharp instructions that make up The Art of Living, readers learn to meet the challenges of everyday life successfully and to face life’s inevitable losses and disappointments with grace.
